Soundscape: The New Music Festival

Great music in New Orleans is never hard to find; from zydeco to Dixieland jazz, the choices are extensive and exciting. And in November, the list will expand to include some of the best classical/contemporary music in the country.

On November 6 through 17 the Contemporary Arts Center presents SOUNDSCAPE, the annual music festival. The festival features performances in contemporary chamber, orchestral and electronic music as well as experimental jazz. The festival’s emphasis this year is on contemporary American composers. SOUNDSCAPE coincides with the Annual International Celebration, American Music Week.

The festival started out as a showcase for local music and musicians. In the beginning it programmed chamber work by local performers. According to CAC Director of Music, Jay Weigel, “New Orleans is not known for its classical music. The folk-roots music, the music with an oral tradition, receives much more attention. It’s a well-kept secret that we have many classical musicians who are well-educated and have spent years refining their craft.”

During its five year existence the festival has grown and expanded. Some past performers include jazz greats Leroy Jenkins and Ron Carter and new music ensembles, “Studio Grame” and “Mumbo Jumbo.” This year, the Center once again brings to New Orleans the best in local classical/contemporary music plus ensembles with national and international acclaim.
