Various Artists, Christmas Break (Telarc)

This album is “Relaxing jazz for the holidays,” but for some of the versions, you could replace “relaxing” with “narcotizing” or “blitzed.” Oscar Peterson’s “White Christmas” and Mel Torme’s “Christmastime is Here” sound like the beautiful product of a Romilar binge, so much so that by comparison, Dave Brubeck and Gerry Mulligan’s “Santa Claus is Coming to Town” sounds rollicking. Merry Christmas by Jackie Gleason may be the definitive slow Christmas album, but for those who want quiet without the haunted, deeply melancholy vibe of Gleason’s album, this is a solid second.
