More Dominos

September 25 will be quite a day for Fats Domino and fans of his music. The Tipitina’s Foundation and Vanguard Records will be releasing Going Home: A Tribute to Fats Domino, a double CD, which will feature Robert Plant, Willie Nelson, Bonnie Raitt and others. That is also the date when CSP Records will release two Fats Domino reissue CDs. The First King of Rock and Roll, Volume One will contain 32 tracks recorded in the mid-1960s that originally appeared on ABC Paramount. The material was recorded in Nashville with Domino’s band in support. Volume Two will contain the remaining ABC Paramount material as well as the Sleeping on the Job album recorded at Sea-Saint Studio in 1978. None of this material has been reissued in the United States on CD.

Last year, CSP re-released Domino’s Christmas is a Special Day, which previously appeared on EMI but had gone out of print around 1999. CSP licensed the ABC Paramount tracks and the Sleeping on the Job album from a German label, Disky.

On August 13, Capitol/EMI Records celebrated the release of Greatest Hits: Walking to New Orleans at Tipitina’s French Quarter. The Recording Industry Association of America commemorated the occasion by presenting Domino with reproductions of 20 of his gold records, all of which were lost in the flood. With his typical verbosity, Domino accepted, asking, “What’s there to say but thank you?”
