Eric Lindell, Low on Cash, Rich in Love (Alligator)

This release picks up where 2006’s Change in the Weather left off, a point at which most listeners would agree is a pretty good place to start. Recorded at Piety Street Studio, there’s a definitely a New Orleans funk feel about Low on Cash, Rich in Love. In fact, the title track sounds like it could have been lifted from an early ’70s Meters LP. Ibid “Mind Your Business,” which sports a back-in-the-alley groove and a really catchy turn around. On the other hand, “Tried and True” has an early ’60s soul arrangement, a la Sam Cooke or Ben E. King.

Lindell hits a bump on “Lady Day and John Coltrane,” largely because the lyrics make no sense at all. He makes up for it though on “It’s My Pleasure.” which has a similar feel to what British soul diva Amy Winehouse had on her last CD. The CD concludes on a high point with “All Night Long,” an attractive blend of country and funk. Low on Cash, Rich in Love is a wire-to-wire winner.
