Ike & Tina Turner, The Ike & Tina Turner Story 1960-1975 (Time Life)

While a three-CD collection might seem capable of telling the entire Ike and Tina story, such was size of their body of their recorded repertoire—especially if one also considers the recordings of the Ikettes, the many artists that were part of the duo’s revue and Ike’s solo material—that this set is merely three chapters in a lengthy biography. For this reason, this collection sticks mainly to the hits and leaves out some extraordinary B-sides and album tracks. Disc one is comprised of powerful early 1960s R&B landmarks including “A Fool in Love,” “I Idolize You,” and the brilliant “It’s Gonna Work Out Fine.” (That’s not Ike’s voice on there, but rather Mickey Baker’s.) While one might question the choice of some early tracks, the omission of “A Letter from Tina” and “Tina’s Dilemma” is the most puzzling. Disc two takes us to the late 1960s and early 1970s, when one can immediately hear the change in their stylistic direction. While the group retains its soulfulness, there are definite elements of rock in their music as covers such as “Come Together,” “Proud Mary” and “Honky Tonk Woman” confirm. As a result, by the early 1970s, the duo was effectively off the chitlin’ circuit in favor of larger rock venues. One can also see Tina’s growth as an artist (soon to go solo) on “Nutbush City Limits” and “Acid Queen.” Disc three is comprised of a powerful live set from 1969. (I witnessed the Ike & Tina Turner Revue ignite the gymnasium at the University of Waterloo around this time. Such was my enthrallment that I snuck backstage and got Ike and Tina’s signatures of an empty bucket of KFC chicken.) While the live material is comprised nearly entirely of covers, nobody on stage is half steppin’. Musical highlights include “Son of a Preacher Man” and “Sweet Soul Music, but what’s really a charge is Tina’s pontificating during the breaks. (Fellas, you wouldn’t ever want get on the bad side of Miss Tina.) Superlative booklet inside which makes this simply one of the best R&B/soul reissues released in several years.
