Joe Hall, Good Times Good Music (Independent)

It wasn’t long after Joe Hall’s La Danse Finis Pas hit the streets that he was pegged as a one trick pony that could only play the traditional Creole house dance style. He returned to the studio as soon as possible to silence those know-it-all critics, and silence them he did, churning out a potent brew of trad Cajun and zydeco tunes without resorting to any Creole house dance stuff. Hall’s unusual because not many of today’s zydeco practitioners are as adept as he is in the ornamented Cajun style and zydeco with its rhythmic emphasis. With a supporting squadron that includes Pine Leaf Boys’ Blake Miller alternating between Cajun and Creole fiddle styles, Hall comes out strong on Octa Clark’s “Back Of Town” and Beau Jocque’s “Slept Outside Last Night,” a contemporary title that manages to feel ancient. About the time the fourth track “Yo Yo Two Step” comes along, Hall hits his groove and never looks back. Neither does the rest of the band who would eventually become Hall’s Louisiana Cane Cutters. Exhilarating to the last drop.
