Nat King Cole, Cole Espanol/More Cole Espanol (EMI/Collector’s Club)

This two-disc set from the current Nat King Cole reissue series is another angle on the genre-mix of Os Mutantes. When Capitol Records presented Cole singing Latin music, it all sounded like the American popular music of the day. The backing tracks were recorded in Cuba (Cole Español) and Mexico City (More Cole Español), but there’s nothing in them that doesn’t sound like it couldn’t have been cut in Los Angeles. Latin sounds met American pop and were immediately domesticated. Nothing alien or exotic survives. Of course, it wasn’t supposed to; this is all about Cole, and his star power and elegance shines through, despite his obvious lack of fluency in Spanish.
