I Write the Songs

For Jim McCormick, becoming a Nashville songwriter has been a four-year journey from crashing on a friend’s couch for weeks at a time to a livelihood in the country music capitol. Tim McGraw, Trace Adkins, Rodney Adkins, Ronnie Milsap, and Blue County are just some of the acts that have recorded his songs, and he co-wrote Luke Bryan’s “We Rode in Trucks,” which peaked in the upper 30s of the country charts. McCormick also co-wrote the title track and “Woulda Coulda Shoulda” for Amanda Shaw’s 2008 release, Pretty Runs Out. Before he left New Orleans, McCormick released two solo albums and performed regularly at Jazz Fest.

“I am not a cowboy,” McCormick says. “I’ve been to rodeos and drank moonshine, but I don’t pretend that’s me.” In fact, he received a M.F.A. in creative writing with a focus on poetry from UNO. His facility with language and ability to write from alternate perspectives has most recently earned him a song on Randy Travis’ new album Around the Bend, and prompted Trisha Yearwood to cut “Cowboys Are My Weakness” on Heaven, Heartache and the Power of Love.

He returns to New Orleans August 15 to the Ogden Museum of Southern Art to play some of his recent compositions.
