The 2010 New Orleans Film Festival continues today with a slew of good movies. Of particular note are the classic French new wave film Breathless, by the acclaimed director Jean-Luc Godard; Night Catches Us, starring native New Orleanian Wendell Pierce and a couple of his fellow actors from the TV series The Wire; and two local films, Land of Opportunity and Bury the Hatchet. The former, directed by Luisa Dantas, is a documentary that examines the numerous social, political, and personal struggles faced by people from different walks of life in the rebuilding of New Orleans post-Katrina. Bury the Hatchet, by Aaron Walker, is a rare inside look behind the ornate suits of the Mardi Gras Indians, focusing on three Big Chiefs: Alfred Doucette of the Flaming Arrows, Monk Boudreaux of the Golden Eagles, and Victor Harris of the Spirit of Fi-Yi-Yi and the Mandingo Warriors. It goes from the history of the tradition to the struggles in its present day, both from police harrassment and the loss of members post-Katrina.
