Curren$y Releases Covert Coup: Free 4-20 Mixtape

Although Curren$y is far more versatile than the “weed rapper” moniker always placed on him by national media, it also can be hard to find another New Orleanian so publicly devoted to the smoker’s life (Kermit Ruffins gives him a run for the money). So it’s no surprise that Curren$y chose today–April, 20–to release his latest mixtape, Covert Coup. The tape, being offered as a free download, is his first since moving to Warner Brothers Records. It also marks the first release to come out of his new partnership with producer The Alchemist, whose resume includes credits with a who’s who of the past decade in hip-hop.

Stylistically, The Alchemist doesn’t change Curren$y’s sound much from the vaporized synths and jazz style that marked the rapper’s Pilot Talk I and II albums and other recent mixtapes. Frequent collaborators Smoke DZA, Freddie Gibbs, and fellow No Limit Records alum Fiend all take guest turns, but there’s never any doubt that Curren$y’s easy-pour flow is the star of the show.

Of course, this release is the only the beginning of the holiday celebration for Curren$y–he’ll be performing tonight at the Howlin’ Wolf with fellow JET Lifers Trademark, Young Roddy, Fiend and Corner Boy P. Tickets are available HERE. You can stream the whole new mixtape below.
