Carolina Chocolate Drops and Lee Fields on Liveset: Win Tickets to See Fields in Person

After a beautiful front-yard concert with Hurray for the Riff Raff on the eve of French Quarter Fest, we’re partnering with online live concert folks Liveset for another couple of shows to kick off Jazz Fest.

Up first are the Carolina Chocolate Drops—profiled in our online Jazz Fest Bible package—performing on Thursday at 1:30 p.m. (as always, the Liveset stream will be free).

The Chocolate Drops play old-timey rural Carolina music with a modern twist, often combining banjo and fiddle with beat-boxing for a fresh take on folk. In the past year, they even added New Orleans cellist Leyla McCalla to their touring lineup. The band plays The Temple on Friday, and Jazz Fest Saturday at 4:20 p.m. on the Fais Do-Do Stage.

Lee Fields

Lee Fields on Liveset Saturday, April 28 at 6 p.m. CST

Liveset’s second live concert stream of the week takes place Saturday in the early evening at 6 p.m. with the outstanding veteran soul singer Lee Fields. Fields will be performing later that night at One Eyed Jacks, and his Liveset show will take place at a secret venue in the French Quarter. Read on if you want to be in the audience in person.

Fields has been recording and performing since the mid-1960s, getting his start covering the soul and funk hits of the day at school dances in North Carolina and Virginia. After years of releasing rare crate-digging classics, he was found in the mid-’90s by a new generation of musicians who went on to found the tastemaking record labels Daptone and Truth & Soul. In March, Fields’ most recent album, Faithful Man, was released. It’s probably the best recordings he’s made, full of deep soul against the rich, hard-cracking band in the background.
