Various Artists, Ingrid Lucia Presents New Orleans Female Vocalists (American Brat Collaboration)

Always community-minded, vocalist and bandleader Ingrid Lucia has put together a great compilation of female singers from across the New Orleans music scene. The lineup here sticks close to the roots music that New Orleans is famous for. Lucia includes veterans of New Orleans, including Banu Gibson with the sad ballad “Blues In My Heart” and the unsung New Orleans standard “Laissez Faire” from the Pfister Sisters, as well as relative newcomers Aurora Nealand, who contributes a graceful “Ne Me Quitte Pas,” and Sarah Quintana singing “With My Baby By My Side.”

It’s also a treat to hear vocalists who are often overlooked in New Orleans, such as Roselyn Lionhart (of David and Roselyn) who rocks out with the blues classic “Hoochie Coochie Man” but renamed for its female perspective “Hoochie Coochie Woman.” And to illustrate that female vocalists in New Orleans are not stuck in the past, Lucia wisely chooses Alexandra Scott’s “Something Altogether New” (which would not be out of place on a Radiohead album) and Kristin Diable’s “Sister Sadie,” a fine, slow-burning soul number. As both a promotional tool and a time capsule of where female vocalists are in 21st-Century New Orleans, Ingrid Lucia Presents New Orleans Female Vocalists succeeds.
