Drago’s Metairie Restaurant’s July 11 Proceeds to Benefit St. Bernard Project

Everyone in New Orleans knows how good Drago’s charbroiled oysters are. They remain one of my favorite treats in the city during my lunchtime excursions with friends. On July 11 you can treat yourself to this delicacy and help rebuild New Orleans at the same time.

In celebration of Drago Cvitanovich’s 90th Birthday, Drago’s Seafood Restaurant’s Metairie location will be donating 100% of its July 11 sales proceeds to the St. Bernard Project, non-profit organization which funds the rebuilding of homes and lives of Hurricane Katrina victims in the New Orleans area. The Cvitanovich family is guaranteeing a donation of at least one home for a family in the hospitality industry, estimated at $35,000, with a goal of raising $90,000 representing each year of Mr. Drago Cvitanovich’s life so far.

Drago’s has been deeply committed to the greater New Orleans community with continuous fundraising efforts since its inception in 1969.

“My father wants his legacy to not only be a great restaurant for his customers, but to contribute by giving back to those who have provided so much to him as loyal customers.” says Drago’s son, Owner/Manager Tommy Cvitanovich. “Building homes for those in need is the perfect birthday present.” This birthday present will be donated to a family in the local hospitality industry, suggested by the St. Bernard Project founders.

“We couldn’t be more pleased with this incredible act of kindness,” says Liz McCartney, Co-Founder of the St. Bernard Project. “Our mission is to remove physical, mental and emotional barriers for vulnerable families, senior citizens and disabled residents who are struggling to recover from the devastation and trauma caused by Hurricane Katrina and the Oil Spill. Our disaster rebuilding and affordable housing efforts will be greatly impacted by this generous donation of the Cvitanovich family.”

Drago’s Metairie location will be open and accepting donations on July 11, 2012, from 11:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. A celebratory cake ceremony will be held at 2:00 p.m. for Mr. Drago Cvitanovich. The Drago’s Charbroiling Engine, a fire truck equipped for grilling and catering, will also make special appearances in various New Orleans neighborhoods throughout the day, serving food and allowing others to participate in the Birthday Wish of Mr. Cvitanovich by accepting additional donations for the St. Bernard Project.

Reed Ingram with Interstate Windows and Doors is supporting the event by donating the windows and doors for at least one of the homes. Other businesses are being solicited and more are welcome. Get involved by contacting Tommy Cvitanovich at tommy@dragosrestaurant.com.
