Grammy Award winner Irvin Mayfield hosts the Love Sessions (August 18-29).

In 2009, the first of Mayfield’s “Love Sessions” raised over $40,000 for local nonprofit groups and charities through ticket sales and sponsorships. By 2011 the program expanded to an 11-night festival, and this year it adds another night and will raise money for 14 nonprofits.

The popular trumpet battle between Mayfield and Kermit Ruffins starts things off Saturday, August 18 at the Playhouse in the Royal Sonesta Hotel on Bourbon Street. Mayfield and Ruffins will then square off every night until the following Friday, August 24.

On Saturday, August 25 the event moves to the I Club in the JW Marriott where Mayfield will host the great jazz vocalist Dee Dee Bridgewater. Bridgewater will also join Mayfield and the New Orleans Jazz Orchestra on October 8 in New York at Carnegie Hall for a concert to celebrate the orchestra’s tenth anniversary.

The Love Sessions are dedicated to the memory of Irvin’s father, Irvin Mayfield Sr., who died in the federal flood following Hurricane Katrina in 2005.

The local nonprofits who will benefit from the Love Sessions are: the New Orleans Public Library, UNITY of Greater New Orleans, the New Orleans Haitian Relief Task Force, Son of a Saint Sports Foundation, Dag’s House, the New Orleans Chapter of the Links, Inc., the New Orleans Musicians’ Clinic, Teaching Responsible Earth Education, NO/Aids Task Force, the New Orleans Jazz Institute, St. Augustine High School’s Marching 100, the Roots of Music, Dash Thirty Dash and the New Orleans Jazz Orchestra.
