“A lot of that music bores me,” says drummer and vibraphonist Jason Marsalis candidly in this week’s episode of OffBeat’s Look-Ka Py Py Podcast. Specifically, he’s referring to an overtly complex style of modern jazz that he feels has reduced the form to frivol. Though outspoken on the subject, Marsalis, himself, is a daring modern jazz musician. Here, he gives us a look into his recent project with the Marcus Roberts Trio, a joint-collaboration featuring banjoist Bela Fleck (which yielded the album Across the Imaginary Divide), his upcoming album In a World of Mallets, which features a plethora of mallet percussion, as well as how he draws inspiration from traditional jazz. Enjoy!
