Flea Goes Guitar Shopping, Red Hot Chili Peppers Miss New Orleans

Tonight, funk-punk rock stars the Red Hot Chili Peppers will play to a sold-out New Orleans Arena crowd, making good on a previously canceled February date. Despite the setback, 2012 has proved itself to be another monster year for the longstanding L.A. outfit. Earlier this year, the group solidified their rock-god status with spot in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. They celebrated the occasion with the EP release Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Covers, a short-but-sweet collection of B-Sides and outtakes culled together through the years. More recently, the Chili Peppers unearthed the I’m with You Sessions, a set of singles left off of their 2011 long-player I’m with You.

In May, the Chili Peppers spent some time in Big Easy, recording the video for the single “Brendan’s Death Song.” It was during this period that the band’s bassist savant, Flea, got hip to the Rebirth Brass Band. After catching the Grammy-winning horn brigade’s famed Tuesday-night Maple Leaf show, he shared his exuberance with the Twitterverse. Not long after, it was announced that Rebirth would be joining the RHCP on the Northwest leg of their current tour.

Yesterday, while kicking around town Flea swung by International Vintage Guitars and snagged this classic six-string, a surprise birthday gift for RHCP guitarist Josh Klinghoffer.

While the multi-multi-platinum act’s association to the Crescent City doesn’t date back long, it certainly seems that lately, they’ve come to know what it feels like to miss New Orleans. Perhaps this epic jam sesh with hometown funk juggernauts The Meters at Voodoo Fest ’06 left more that just the 90,000+ fans in attendance with something special to hold on to.
