Basin Street Records celebrates 15 years in the land of dreams

Today, Oct. 22, marks the 15th anniversary of New Orleans-based Basin Street records. Mark Samuels has kept the label going through a series of challenges ranging from the destruction of the company’s office in the 2005 flood to the death of brick-and-mortar record stores.

Through creative marketing and his own hard work, Samuels has developed the careers of some of the most important New Orleans musicians, including Kermit Ruffins, 2012 Grammy winners Rebirth Brass Band, Theresa Andersson, Irvin Mayfield, Jason Marsalis, Jeremy Davenport and Dr. Michael White.

The label’s first release, a live album by Kermit Ruffins and the Barbecue Swingers recorded at Tipitina’s, was released in February 1998. The company will celebrate the event Nov. 16th at Tipitina’s with a special performance from Ruffins.
