I Heart Louisiana Launches Mardi Gras Throws Contest

Toss me dat, NOLA!

Louisiana residents statewide are encouraged to compete this Mardi Gras season to create and vote on 2013’s “Best Throws.”

I Heart Louisiana is running an event called “Throw Me Something Local, Mister!” The organization, whose mission is “to protect the unique beauty found in the people, culture, and wildlife of Louisiana,” is hosting the campaign to promote and emphasize environmental sustainability.

Participation is simple:

  • Design a Mardi Gras Throw – creativity and multiple entries are highly encouraged. It can be art, food, functional items, toys… the possibilities are endless. Additional prizes in store for entries made from recycled throws.
  • Spread the word. Tell friends, family and strangers to “Like” Facebook entries. Throws with the most votes will be considered as winners.

Though the contest will aid efforts in diminishing negative effects on the environment, it will also provide a shift in money from overseas Mardi Gras manufacturers to the pockets of local artists.

The “Throw Me Something Local, Mister!” Awards Banquet and Art Show will be held on Monday, February 4, from 6 to 9 p.m. at the Bywater Art Lofts Gallery.

Winners will be invited to the banquet and given prizes in a number of categories (Best Recycled Throw, Best Louisiana Throw, Best Edible Throw, etc.) and age ranges. Prize packages also include riding in a major Mardi Gras parade, sales through iheartlouisiana.com and recognition of achievement via trophy and more.

Details can be found on IHeartLouisiana’s website and Facebook page. All entries must be in by 11:59 p.m. on January 31.
