Kiné McKay, I’m So New Orleans (Independent)

Kine Mcay, I'm So New Orleans, album cover

Kiné McKay has a gruffly soulful voice, and this EP is a nice mix of social commentary and personal statement that could use a little more focus. Most of these songs are interesting and original, but there is the occasional misstep. Unfortunately, “Frenchman St.” [sic] is as banal as it sounds, and the EP’s slapdash instrumentation and production don’t always do the songs justice. Even so, tracks like “I’m So New Orleans” and “Cross That Water” are enjoyable additions to the growing library of New Orleans funk.
