It’s here, the beginning of the end. After a successful on-again, off-again 10-year run, The Asshole Monologues embarks on its self-proclaimed farewell tour.
The production, inspired by Eve Ensler’s Vagina Monologues and created over a 6-pack of beer, has established itself as one of the longest running theatrical productions in New Orleans history. “What began as a lark, as a parody of The Vagina Monologues, turned into an homage to it, and then after time it became a runaway train of its own,” says creator and co-star Chris Rose.
Having played prominent venues throughout the Crescent City—including Tipitina’s, the House of Blues, and Le Chat Noir—The Asshole Monologues is now coming to a barstool near you. Shows are scheduled at Monkey Hill, Hi Ho Lounge, and both Howlin’ Wolf locations.
“It’s actually been called by several critics literary and smart, which is not something we ever intended to do,” says Rose, who also affirms that the show is, “certainly the dirtiest thing you’ll ever hear onstage in your life.”
Interestingly enough, women between the age of 35 and 55 make up the show’s most supportive demographic. Unlike The Vagina Monologues, which caters to a female audience, The Asshole Monologues appeals to men and women alike. “It’s a show for everyone,” says Rose, “it’s a show for anyone who knows one, is one, or has one.”
After a decade of shocks, laughs and liberations, the end is really here. Your last chance to educate yourself on the ins and outs of the most misunderstood part of the human body has arrived. “By the time it’s done, you have no more questions about the asshole,” Rose guarantees. “We cover it all.”
The farewell tour begins Friday, January 8 at 8 p.m. at The Howlin’ Wolf Northshore.
