What: Hogs for the Cause, a music festival built around a pork cook-off.
When: March 24 in City Park.
Why: To raise money to help families dealing with pediatric cancer. Last year raised $100,000.
Who cooks: Pros and amateurs alike. They set up their rigs on-site, do their smoking and cooking there, and they sell pork dishes to attendees.
Who plays: This year, Trombone Shorty and Orleans Avenue, Voice of the Wetlands All-Stars, Marcia Ball, Stooges Brass Band, the Gourds, Mississippi Rail Company.
What it’s like: Hog heaven. Last year I judged the ribs and “porkpourri” categories and had a half-dozen ribs I’d rave about (including one that I eat regularly), and someone made a pork belly corndog.
