A clarinetist and professor of Spanish and Afro-American music at Xavier University whose home was flooded during Katrina, on this evening Dr. White’s Liberty Jazz Band succeeded in washing the blues away. Performing standards of early jazz for a double bill dubbed “Putumayo Records Presents Brass Band Night,” the band delighted its audience interpreting compositions of New Orleans giants including Narvin Kimball and Sidney Bechet. For a rendition of “Panama, a Characterist Novelty” vocalist Juanita Brooks joined the group singing the 1912 Dixieland jazz classic. Following White, the 6-piece all-brass front-line of the Hot 8 Brass Band conjures one word: power. Raining fire from the stage, the horn section of the closing act was backed by a swinging drums and tuba rhythm combo that left second liners literally shimmying the night away.
