Readers voted the Brass-a-holics as Best Emerging Band at this year’s Best of the Beat. Tonight, the go-go/brass/hip-hop/funk band will perform at Le Bon Temps Roule, and after the heavy-on-the-hype introduction, you can see them in action at the St. Jude Community Center benefit last year.

Foburg Festival Music Lineup + Film and Comedy Series Announced

Foburg Festival, the indie music fest scheduled around the South by Southwest music conference in Austin, Texas, has announced its 2012 lineup, with Maps and Atlases, Japanther, J. Roddy Walston & The Business, and Big Freedia headlining.

Foburg Festival, now in its third year, will take place Friday, March 9 through Sunday, March 11, and will again be spread over ten venues in the Marigny and Bywater. Weekend passes valid for any festival event will go on sale later this week for $25.

Other touring bands confirmed include Shayfer James, The Men, Aunt Martha, Black Taxi, and The Pharmacy. Local bands in the lineup include Sun Hotel, Caddywhompus, Rotary Downs, Big History, Brass Bed, Katey Red, Sissy Nobby, Jean-Eric, King Rey, Royal Teeth, and Prom Date.

New to the Foburg Fest this year will be film and comedy components. foburg.film, a partnership with Jon Jackson and Timecode:nola, will show films that include the “Paths of Hate”, a short film from Poland; “The Hunter & The Swan Discuss their Meeting”, a 2011 Sundance Official Selection; and local documentaries “Bury The Hatchet” and “Un Heard Of”. Screenings will be held at Mimi’s in the Marigny, Lost Love Lounge, and a to-be-announced outdoor lot where wireless headphones will be provided.

foburg.comedy will be produced by The New Movement, who curated theHell Yes Fest! comedy festival in November. Comedians slated to perform include Cyrus Coope, Dane Faucheux, Chris Trew, Drew Platt, John F. O’Donnell, Stupid Time Machine, and Karl Hess.

Hangout Music Festival Lineup, Tickets Announced

Gulf Shores, Alabama’s Hangout Music Fest will return for its third year this summer with a lineup that includes Dave Matthews Band, Jack White (who’ll release his solo debut, Blunderbuss, on April 24), String Cheese Incident, Skrillex, Wilco, the Flaming Lips (who’ll perform their Dark Side of the Moon album) and more. Weekend-long ticket packages go on sale Friday at 11 a.m. CST for the beach-front festival, which this year takes place May 18-20. Ticket packages range from general admission to VIP tickets that include golf cart chauffeur service. Last year’s festival sold out of early bird packages, and the festival itself sold out.

So far, the lineup also includes Dispatch, Steve Winwood, Chris Cornell, STS9, Gogol Bordello, Michael Franti and Spearhead, Mac Miller, Flogging Molly, Coheed and Cambria, Paul Oakenfold, G. Love and Special Sauce, Randy Newman, Dr. Dog, Young the Giant, Cage the Elephant, Dawes, the Alabama Shakes, M. Ward, Yelawolf, Switchfoot, Julian Marley, Zeds Dead, Mavis Staples, Shpongle, Gary Clark Jr., Rebelution, Allen Stone, Big Freedia, The Devil Makes Three, Paper Diamond, Futurebirds, Hey Rosetta!, Sleeper Agent, the Lumineers, Archnemesis, Tribal Seeds, Rich Aucoin and Jamie Bergeron with more yet to be announced.

Krewe du Vieux: Photos

The first official Mardi Gras parade of the year—Krewe du Vieux—marched through the Marigny and French Quarter Saturday night, full of its usual satiric, irreverent, and lewd floats and costumes. The theme for this year’s parade, Krewe du Vieux’s 20th, was “Crimes Against Nature”.

Kickstart the Riff Raff

Hurray for the Riff Raff has readied a new album, Look Out Mama, and while the band has a label, Loose Music, to release the album in England, it’s planning to release the album itself in America. To help make that happen, it has started a Kickstarter campaign. Among the premiums for contributing is an album of covers titled My Dearest, Darkest Neighbor. The two tracks on the Kickstarter page—John Lennon’s “Jealous Guy” and Townes Van Zandt’s “Delta Mama Blues”—suggest that it’s a stripped down affair focused on Alynda Lee Segarra’s voice. New Music: Galactic Says It’s Carnival Time

On its new Carnivale Electricos, Galactic rearranges one of Mardi Gras’ signature songs—“Carnival Time”—and brings along the man who wrote it and made it famous, Al “Carnival Time” Johnson. The album is due out on Fat Tuesday—February 21—but since parades have started and it is Carnival Time, the band has given us the song as a download to preview the album.

Detroit’s Planet D Nonet are in town tonight and tomorrow night, performing the music of Sun Ra, whose music they recorded on the recent We Travel the Spaceways: the Music of Sun Ra. The group aren’t simply avant-garde fans; they see the connections between big-band conceptualists across the spectrum, including Duke Ellington and and Fletcher Henderson. Here’s a video of the nonet performing “El Is the Sound of Joy,” and a bonus video introducing the group and its concept.

The Planet D Nonet performs tonight at 8 p.m. at Zeitgeist Multi-Disciplinary Arts Center and Tuesday at 8 and 10 p.m. at Snug Harbor.

Treme Sidewalk Steppers Second Line Parade: Route and Map

The Treme Sidewalk Steppers host their annual Super Bowl second line this Sunday, February 5. The parade starts at noon.

The Treme Sidewalk Steppers come out for the second line at the African-American Museum at Governor Nicholls and N. Villere in the Treme. The parade then heads over to Basin St./Orleans Ave. and up towards Broad. There are two stops along Broad before turning down A.P. Tureaud and stopping at Bullet’s. It then continues down St. Bernard, turning on Claiborne for a stop and turn at the Labat Charbonnet Funeral Home. The final stretch goes down Claiborne and turns onto St. Bernard before disbanding at Sidney’s Saloon.

R&B producer Clarence Reid is responsible for much of the great soul tracks out of Miami including Betty Wright’s “Clean Up Woman,” but he’s better known by his alter ego, the foul-mouthed Blowfly. In a mask, cape and superhero shirt, he still has the superpower to talk about sex in the most outrageous terms after 40 years.

His career shifted from one cult to another in the early 2000s when members of Fishbone took him on tour that came to the Howlin’ Wolf and introduced him to younger audiences that had never heard his party records. Since then, he’s toured the world and been the subject of a 2011 documentary, The Weird World of Blowfly. He’ll play Siberia tonight with the Super Nice Brothers and DJ Soul Sister.

Hammond B3 player Ike Stubblefield got his start as part of the Motown Revue in 1968, and he has spent his career since playing with a musical who’s who on the road or in the studio. Recently, he was in town to play organ on Ruthie Foster‘s Let It Burn (recorded at Piety Street Studios), and on Saturday he’ll be part of Walter “Wolfman” Washington’s “Afunkalypse” at the Krewe du Vieux Doo (tickets on sale now at Louisiana Music Factory, Petcetera, Up in Smoke on Magazine Street and other outlets listed on the KdV site). Tonight, Stubblefield will play a trio gig at Snug Harbor with Herlin Riley and Detroit Brooks (shows at 8 and 10 p.m.). Here’s footage of Stubblefield in action.
