Hubris

I need me some zen.

And I don’t mean the absinthe, either.

I’m worried about New Orleans and the Louisiana Gulf Coast. There’s an oil spill out there that will most certainly negatively impact not only the quality of my life, but my children’s. It’s another Katrina, except we haven’t experienced its full impact yet.

I’m pissed because I live in a country whose interests are so bound up by making sure there’s a big profit margin that its government lollygags around and gives these guys in the oil business way too much leeway. Our coastline is being destroyed nothing substantial is being done to stop the flow of oil. The whole coast of Louisiana is mobilized: fishermen, crabbers, shrimpers, conservationists, hell, even people who went to the Gulf Relief concert on Sunday to thrown in a few bucks for the cause. But BP and its buddies are taking their sweet time. Yeah, I know it takes a while to stop the leaking. But you guys should have had remedies in place before this happened. Or if this happened. It’s hubris at its worst. It’s like the “unsinkable” Titanic. Shit happens. It’s always gonna happen because we are fallible humans, people! What were these bozos thinking? Why aren’t they being regulated and overseen by an agency of the government? Actually, I know the answer to that question, but I won’t get too political here.

On a much more selfish note, I’m wondering how in the hell we’re going to get any seafood. We’ve been told that the supply is relatively safe, but I’m sorry, I just don’t buy that. I’m thinking about all the restaurants in New Orleans that won’t have seafood anymore. My God, seafood is almost as ingrained in our culture as music.

I urge you to get involved in protecting our gulf coast; call your representative, don’t put up with the stuff you’re being fed. Donate whenever possible.

Take a boatload of hay out there to soak up the floating oil (did you see this video?).

We’re sitting in New Orleans waiting for the next catastrophe to rain down on us. And hurricane season is only a little over a month away…
