Asylum Street Spankers, The Last Laugh (Yellow Dog Records)

Asylum Street Spankers, The Last Laugh, album cover, OffBeat Magazine, November 2014

There are many bands that integrate humor with their songs, but few who do it so well or without detracting from the music as the late, lamented Asylum Street Spankers.

This, their final recording (allegedly), is taken from their final gig (allegedly).

It emphasizes their strong points: the way they play together on acoustic instruments, their humorous and snide attitude toward their audience, their subject matter, and themselves, and singer Christine Marrs’ powerful voice.

Their command of both the spirit and music of the Americana-esque tunes (for lack of a better term) that they brought to the stage every night was undiminished until their end.

The arrangements are tight but loose enough to allow the evening’s vibe to inform the performance, which on this final evening inspired them even more than usual.

Songs such as “Fuck Work” and “She Texted Me Goodbye” as well as cynical asides and background vocals that sometimes sound straight out of Looney Tunes indicate that, even to the end, they hadn’t lost their joy and humor. Even the more spiritual songs in this set have a caustic side with a take on “Don’t You Hear Jerusalem Moan” that insults everyone from preachers to Zionists.

And Marrs’s vocals, whether sweetly singing on “Ludicrous Heart” or powerfully belting on Tom Waits’ “Make It Rain,” is still a force to be heard.

This live record will remind fans of how great this band was and make the uninitiated wish they had been there.
