Duke Robillard, World Full of Blues (Stony Plain Records)

Rhode Island guitar wizard Duke Robillard picks up where last year’s Guitar Groove-a-rama left off, as he continue to pay tribute to the guitarists that helped shape his style. A double CD, Robillard’s concept here is to touch upon nearly all the sub-genres of blues and blues-related music. In doing so, he tips his musical hat to Memphis Slim, B.B., T-Bone, Booker T., Billy Butler, Eric Bibb, Bo Diddley, Jimmy Reed and even Bob Dylan. Naturally, there are several covers, but there are some delicious originals, too. “You’re Killin’ Me Baby” is a slow burner, “Monkey Arms” is a coy blues rocker, “Gonna Get You Told,” is an attractive blues rocker, while “Look Out” has a strutting Latin beat. Unfortunately, Robillard self-indulgence will lose some listeners along the way though as there are several “improvisational” instrumentals that seem to go on forever. Robillard plays nearly 20 different guitars here, and notes which instruments are played on each song in the notes. Guitaraholics will naturally be interested in this one, but if your collection needed a lone Duke Robillard CD, this wouldn’t be my first choice.
