Lane Mack, Lane Mack (Independent)

Stepping out of the shadows of South Louisiana roots rockers Sons of Voodoo, guitarist Lane Mack’s seven-tune, eponymously titled EP is one helluva joy ride.

From the opening barrage of “Blues is Coming” and ending with the throttling, Baby Bee-backed “Trouble & Worry,” Mack keeps it rocking in inventive ways with a vocal swagger that’s similar to his uncle Roddie Romero.

In between, there’s a rompin’ shuffle (“High & Tight”) and an R&B strutter (“Sunrise”) that’s features a soul-jazz sax solo by Bob Luckey. “Jesus Cadillac” starts off in an electra-Delta mode that’s supplemented by a gospel-ish choir that includes Alexa Dirks and Andrina Turenne of Manitoba’s Chic Gamine.

A helicopter blade comes whooshing in and the song erupts into a full blown rocker that’s close to spiraling out of control. But where the party really busts open is on “Be You,” an off-the-hook zydeco rocker with nonc Roddie pumping furiously away on squeezebox.

For being only seven tracks, Mack accomplishes a lot here, and it’s only natural to clamor for more.

A perfect stroke on the sweet spot.
