Nirvana, Nevermind (DGC)

Seattle, Washington’s Nirvana burst onto the music scene in a big way with this, its major-label debut. You might have been hard-pressed to find the record in local stores around Christmas time, since sales were so brisk. This three-piece band, fronted by guitarist Kurt Cobain, once again proves that rebellious, groove-thrash garage music has a place in the mainstream.

The creatively-named hit single “Smells Like Teen Spirit” is reason enough to purchase this album (apparently quite a few people agree…largely on the strength of that song, the album went to Number One on the Billboard chart). The songs are emotional and powerful, with lots of dynamic changes that are sure to grab you. With just bass, drums and guitar, Nirvana manages to create a non-monotonous, no-bullshit sound. While the band’s lyrics could be considered chaotic at times, the musicians’ bashing tribute to superficiality is prevalent throughout. For fans of aggressive rock, this album is an oasis in the desert of glamour and fluff.
