Stover with the Voormen, Low Night Lights (Independent)

Stover with the Voormen, album cover, OffBeat Magazine, May 2014

There is a lot of night in Stover and the Voormen’s new release, Low Night Lights. There is the lead-off track with the insomniac who counts the hours while debating “making the morning explode…pouring gasoline on the fireworks stand.” Later, there is the weary lament of “Masquerade Hesitate” with its call of “Don’t know why?” and, after that, the title track.

With all these different ideas of night, there is a certain secrecy to the record. Things aren’t working out for the subjects of the songs and no one is quite sure why. It’s mysterious but, on the whole, the music works from the other side. It is good pop music with echoes of Beach Boy harmonies in “Low Night Lights” and the vocals and good-natured stomp of Big Star in “Nashville, TN.”

At times, there is a country feel with slide guitar such as on the last track and “Valentine’s Day Fight.” The band is tight but still loose enough to have that bar-band feel. You would think that the night mystery of the vocals and lyrics would work against the bright sound of the music but they mesh together well and make for a record to be listened to both day and night.
