The Fabulous Thunderbirds, Walk That Walk, Talk That Talk (Epic Records)

For this, the fabulous new disc by the Fabulous “New” Thunderbirds, the band brought in axe legend Duke Robillard and cool young blues dude Kid Bangham after the departure of co-founder Jimmy Vaughan. And they’ve produced their best disc since T-Bird Rhythm. Opening with the single “Twist of the Knife,” producer Steve Jordan lets the ‘Birds make their most honest and accessible record yet. Kim Wilson and Duke tear up Sam and Dave’s “Ain’t That A Lotta Love.” Wilson, often overlooked as a songwriter, has penned some beauts on this one: “Work Together,” with the Gospel Hummingbirds, “Rollercoaster” (a hit single waiting to happen), and “Need Someone To Love” (co-written with Jerry Williams), which boasts a hauntingly soulful vocal from Mr. Wilson as well as a classic Hi-Records arrangement from Willie Mitchell and the Memphis Horns. On the rockers “Feelin’ Good,” “Sweet Thang,” “Can’t Stop Rockin’” and “Paralyzed,” the band is propelled by Preston’s bottom and Fran’s lean and muscular stick-work. The album’s best tune is the ballad “When I Get Home”: classic Stax. Best line, from “Paralyzed”: “Baby, you look so dynamite / my teeth and tongue began to fight.” Best shoes: No contest…Duke!!!
