The Sophisticats, When It Rains It Purrs (Furry Records)

Meow baby, the Sophisticats are back with the purrfect CD for your next cocktail, or Tupperware party. If your music collection lacks the classic LP, How To Strip For Your Husband, this is mandatory listening. No less than 45 minutes of instrumental bump and grind music that’s sheer risqué madness. And it sports a sultry cover to boot. Every note here is a hoot—sleazy saxes, growling guitar, outrageous organ, savage shouts set to a burlesque beat. Wacky song titles abound—”Cat Fink,” “Dog Patch Creeper,” (my favorite) “Soulacous,” “Astro Kitty”—and inventive, uptight arrangements are everywhere. There are 19 reasons to like this CD, all less than two and a half minutes long. You can peg the Sophisticats a novelty group, but they stand tall with a wicked, boss sound that will appeal to hipsters of all ages. One of this year’s best local CDs.
