Walter Jr., Doorway to Heaven, album cover

Without the cover art and photographs of religious icons in a country church, the spiritual overtones may not be immediately obvious on Walter Jr.’s latest concept album. It’s a happy type of record—two people fall blissfully in love and realize they want to be together eternally. Walter Jr. doesn’t treat it lightly or in any sappy sort of way but reverently with respect. His guitar playing is chock full of warm jazz tones—soft, delicate chords that often break into fluid solos. His wispy, expressive vocal delivery is equally creative, especially the staccato, scat-like phrasing of “until the two become one” that drives home the core idea. In its own way, “Can I Keep Falling?” is finger-snapping R&B reminiscent of ’60s Motown while the story’s pivotal track, “Some Better Day,” swings enough for jitterbugging. Along the way, Walter links in the Almighty, suggesting that love is often a three-way affair. The theological concepts and symbolization are heavy but a brief portion of the title track feels metaphysical—a stereo marvel with the phrase “11:11, 11:11” circling the senses. Provocative without being overbearing, Walter Jr. is a master of delivering messages masked in melody.
