83 Year-Old Bluesman Leo “Bud” Welch Comes to New Orleans

Euclid Records in the Bywater will host an in-store performance from bluesman Leo “Bud” Welch on Friday, September 25th, at 5 p.m. Welch will also give a show at Chickie Wah Wah that evening at 9 p.m.

The octogenarian bluesman from Sabougla, Mississippi has been playing blues and gospel music for close to six decades, paralleling a career as a logger in North Mississippi for 35 years.

Welch arrived on the recording scene last year when he released his debut album, Sabougla Voices, in January 2014, two months before his 82nd birthday. His next release, I Don’t Prefer No Blues, came out in March of this year.

Since then, the bluesman has been playing regularly, taking his North Mississippi sound around the country and beyond. Watch Brent Foster’s production, part of the “While I’m Here, The Legacy Project” video series that features Welch.

The concert at Chickie Wah Wah will open a series of shows that includes a performance by Lafayette-based band Rareluth and the Lost Bayou Ramblers on Saturday, September 26th, and a jazz night on Sunday, September 27th that will feature drummer Johnny Vidacovich and guitarist Charlie Hunter.
