Big Easy Rollergirls Open Tryouts Thursday

New Orleans’ premier female roller derby league, the Big Easy Rollergirls, will hold try-outs tomorrow at Skate Country on the Westbank. Fans of full-contact roller skating will get a shot at one of the league’s imaginatively-named teams, among them the Crescent Wenches, the Marigny Antoinettes, and the nationally competitive Big Easy Rollergirls All Stars. Try-outs are open to all women 19 or older, and no athletic or skating experience is required. Aspiring Rollergirls are asked to bring as much protective gear as possible. No one skates without a mouth guard!

The league started up in 2006 and membership has grown steadily ever since. Last year during a double header at UNO, the Rollergirls held a fundraiser for the New Orleans Public Library Summer Reading Program in honor of national library week.

Casual derby enthusiasts should check out the Rollergirls-sponsored screening of Hell on Wheels, a documentary about the Texas-based league that sparked a worldwide renewal of interest in the sport. The screening will take place on Friday, November 12, 9:30 p.m. at Zeitgeist Arts Center.

Try-outs are held from 6-8:30 p.m., Thursday, October 21. Admission is $5.
