Blood, Sweat, and Hair: Music Photography Show Opening Reception

This Saturday evening, funky Mid-City cocktail bar Trèo will host a reception celebrating Blood, Sweat, and Hair, an ongoing exhibit featuring the music photography of Golden G. Richard, III and OffBeat Art Director and Food Editor Elsa Hahne.

Richard and Hahne, who have been photographing musicians for over 20 years and have each received the Hal Ledet Print Photography Award, began collaborating in 2011. They sell limited edition prints of their work semi-regularly at Palmer Park Arts Market and share an online photo-documentary publication. Not to mention, three children.

Their new show at Trèo runs through May 23rd and includes 28 framed shots, some of which have been featured in OffBeat over the years.

They’ve included a smattering of local jazz legends, but you’ll also find Rob Zombie and Mark Osegueda of Death Angel. The show’s real emphasis is on rock, and especially on heavy metal.

“The constant assault of visual energy is really fun to shoot. Photographing a heavy metal show is sort of like shooting a high-energy sport,” said Hahne.

She admits that she didn’t listen much to metal until she met Richard and started shooting shows with him, and since then has developed a fuller appreciation for all genres of music and performance.

“I’ve become a much better listener thanks to live music photography,” she said.

“As a photographer, you perceive music differently. You crave the musicians that are very emotional and physical in their performances, and you almost always find that at rock and heavy metal shows.”

Saturday’s reception runs from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m., with a free wine tasting and music by Datfunk Brass Band. Trèo’s creative, tapas-style small plates will be available for purchase as well.

Trèo is located at 3835 Tulane Avenue.
