Danny Barker Banjo and Guitar Festival returns with historic citywide performances

The 5th Annual Danny Barker Banjo and Guitar Festival will make a six-day run in New Orleans this month, spotlighting the late Barker’s place in music history and the international musicians who help keep his legacy thriving.

Clinics, workshops, panel discussions, interviews and live music performances at a variety of venues remain the signature of this annual festival. This year, the New Orleans Jazz Museum will serve as festival headquarters, where events will be housed for three of the six days of the festival. Prime Example, Snug Harbor, the George and Joyce Wein Center, Bullet’s Sports Bar and the Ellis Marsalis Center for Music will serve as hosts, as well.

Haitian guitarist and educator Claude Carre serves as one of the headliner’s for the 2019 Danny Barker Banjo and Guitar Festival. Also spotlighted are Italian guitarist Fabrizio Sotti and Senegambian kora master Morikeba  Kouyate. Other performers and presenters include Glen Andrews, Detroit Brooks, Wendell Brunious, Joe Dyson, Kermit Ruffins, Gregg Stafford, Treme Brass Band, Don Vappie, Mari Watanabe and Dr. Michael White.

Events will include a Danny Barker Day Parade, Danny Barker Day Proclamation and Celebration, jams and lots more.

The festival kicks off Tuesday, January 8 and runs through Sunday, January 13.
