Deja Vu Opens at NOMA Tonight

Last week, Generic Art Solutions littered the Great Hall at New Orleans Museum of Art with flying glasses and dishes with its performance of “Spill.” Tonight, the show it set the tone for – “Deja Vu All Over Again” – opens in NOMA’s Contemporary Art gallery starting at 6 p.m. For the show, G.A.S. – Matt Vis and Tony Campbell – recreated and modernized classic works of art, integrating themselves into the works to create resonant, modern social commentary. The works are not simply cerebral statements or technical challenges, though. The presentation of “The Raft,” modeled on Theodore Gericault’s “Raft of the Medusa,” reminds us how lonely a death at sea must be and puts those who lost their lives in the Deepwater Horizon explosion back in the story of the BP oil disaster.
