The answer is yes: When Diana Ross comes to town this month she will be doing Supremes hits. Yes, she’s had an often-wildly successful, 43-year career since leaving that group, she’s a legend and an icon and all that. But if you’re like us, you really want to hear those ’60s classics, and you will.

You know the basics: Ross charmed everybody in America (and some guys in England, like the Beatles) with that string of Number Ones (twelve of ‘em, and as many near-misses). Became Berry Gordy’s muse as he began building the Motown empire around her (to mixed reactions from the labels’ other artists). Moved into movies with considerable success, even if Mahogany and the Billie Holiday biopic Lady Sings the Blues are most remembered for their theme songs. Had at least one hit musical, Dreamgirls, written about her career. Influenced everyone with her fashion style—from Lady Gaga to Big Freedia. And pulled some memorable diva moves, including a Supremes “reunion” in 2000 with nobody she’d ever sung with before.
According to the reviews we’ve seen, she’s doing a show packed with hits—done complete, not crammed into medleys—that includes the Supremes essentials plus the ones from her first solo decade, also no slouch in terms of chart action. “I’m Coming Out”—which wasn’t recorded as a gay anthem, but became one with her blessing—opens the show and from there you can boogie down to “Love Hangover”, revisit your ’70s angst with “Do You Know Where You’re Going to?” and get blissed-out for the inevitable finale of “Reach Out & Touch Somebody’s Hand.” And if you’re planning to be Diana Ross for Halloween, you’ll have a head start, as the show takes place on the eve of All Hallow’s Eve.
