Escape Mardi Gras Madness at Family Gras

As the Mardi Gras festivities kick up a notch this weekend, families can retreat to the safety of Jefferson Parish’s Family Gras this Friday through Sunday, February 25-27. Family Gras markets itself as “the perfect weekend getaway for the family.” For those looking to escape the wilds of Orleans Parish, Family Gras is free and has an extensive musical lineup. Eli “Paperboy” Reed, The Guess Who, Tito Jackson (yes, that Tito Jackson), Sister Hazel and Natasha Bedingfield are all scheduled to appear. There will be two stages on Saturday.

Family Gras will be located on the neutral ground between Whole Foods and Lakeside Shopping Center. Each night has a theme—Friday is Fright Night, Saturday is Sports Saturday, and Sunday is Carnival. No word on why all three nights aren’t Carnival themed, but at least last year’s Halloween costumes will get one more use. There will also be food vendors serving parade food (jambalaya, pizza, funnel cake).

Whole Foods will add a little art to the event by sponsoring the Art Walk, which will have local and regional arts-and-crafts booths. The New Orleans Hornets will sponsor the Jester Kids’ Tent, which promises to have “fun activities and characters Saturday and Sunday.”
