Mardi Gras Indian supergroup 79rs Gang is “Bout to Blow”

Mardi Gras Indian Chief duo 79rs Gang has released its lively single “79rs Bout to Blow.” Traditionally rivals from opposing tribes of the 9th and 7th wards in New Orleans, 79rs Gang unite to bring unique cultures and backgrounds together through music. The single and accompanying music video are the first single to be released from an upcoming second album, Expect the Unexpected, which is to be released through local label Sinking City Records in Spring 2020.

79rs Gang is a joint creation of Big Chief Romeo Bougere of the 9th Ward Hunters and Big Chief Jermaine Bossier of the 7th Ward Creole Hunters in 2013. Despite being from different tribes and wards, the duo was able to put differences aside and make music that inspires solidarity. 79rs Gang worked with writer and producer Eric Heigle, whose resume includes Arcade Fire and The Soul Rebels, to create an album that celebrates and cherishes the unique Mardi Gras Indian culture in New Orleans. The album showcases Mardi Gras Indian music in a whole new light, giving listeners tastes of traditional music mixed with modern production elements.

Mardi Gras Indian culture is an essential component to New Orleans. The tradition has been carried on for well over 100 years, centering on elaborate beaded and feathered suits, music and chants, and cultural canon. Mardi Gras Indian chants call on ancestors and warn others to stay out of their way as they tell their stories. Origin stories of Mardi Gras Indians tell of escaped African slaves finding sanctuary with Native Americans in South Louisiana. The intricate suits of the Indians represent resistance to the enslavement and ethnic cleansing of their people. The tradition is celebrated each year on Mardi Gras Day, with the Big Chiefs leading their tribes through the streets of New Orleans.
