Outsider music pioneer Daniel Johnston announces New Orleans show with Preservation Hall All-Stars

Outsider music pioneer Daniel Johnston has announced five stops for his farewell tour, and one of those gigs will bring him to New Orleans. The lo-fi singer-songwriter—who was the subject of the fascinating 2005 documentary The Devil and Daniel Johnston—-will kick off his final outing at New Orleans’ Joy theater on Thursday, September 28.

Every night of Johnston’s upcoming tour is billed as “Daniel Johnston & Friends,” a reference to the fact that he will perform with a different set of special guests during each show. The New Orleans stop will find him collaborating with the Preservation Hall All-Stars, while other gigs will feature Built to Spill, The Districts, Modern Baseball, Wilco frontman Jeff Tweedy and more.

Johnston has also invited the backing bands to choose their setlists, which they will craft from a list of 121 songs that he has released over the course of his four-decade career. On top of that, all of the shows will begin with a screening of The Devil and Daniel Johnston (winner of the Sundance Film Festival’s Documentary Directing Award).

Tickets for Johnston’s upcoming New Orleans show will go on sale to the general public at 10am on Friday, July 28. A pre-sale will begin at 10am on Thursday, July 27.
