Photos: Original Big 7 Social Aid and Pleasure Club “Re-do” Mother’s Day Second Line

On Mother’s Day, the Original Big 7 Social Aid and Pleasure Club’s second line parade came to an abrupt halt at the corner of Frenchmen and North Villere streets when two gunmen fired repeatedly upon its onlookers and fled as the terrified mass scrambled for cover. In the weeks following the tragic scene, police tracked and arrested 19 and 24 year-old brothers Akein and Shawn Scott and charged each with 20 counts of attempted second-degree murder.

Last Saturday (June 1), the Original Big 7 SA&P held a “Re-do” of its May 12 parade as a tribute to those injured and affected by the violent turn of events three weeks prior as well as a show of strength and solidarity among community members against such senseless bloodshed. OffBeat photographer Kim Welsh attended the second line and captured these festive photos from the parade.
