Satchmo SummerFest enlists Nicholas Payton, Kermit Ruffins, John Boutte

Satchmo SummerFest has revealed the lineup for its 17th annual celebration, which is slated to take over the Old U.S. Mint on August 4-6. This year’s gathering will find the event returning to its longtime home after a brief move to Jackson Square in 2016.

Nicholas Payton, Kermit Ruffins, Hot 8 Brass Band, James Andrews and the Crescent City All-Stars, John Boutte, New Orleans Swamp Donkeys, Wendell Brunious, Charmaine Neville, Shamarr Allen and the Underdawgs, Bill Summers & Jazalsa, and many more will perform at the festival. Ruffins will take the stage with his band the Barbecue Swingers, as well as a tribute to Louis Armstrong.

Payton’s performance will mark the famed trumpeter and New Orleans native’s first appearance at the Satchmo SummerFest. Other first-timers include Stephanie Jordan, David L. Harris, Quiana Lynell, Pin Stripe Brass Band and Ashlin Parker’s Trumpet Mafia.

In addition to return to its original home at the Old U.S. Mint, Satchmo Summerfest will bring once again feature an indoor “Back o’ Town” stage. Location on the second floor of the museum, the stage will feature a dancefloor, dancing instruction from the NOLA Jitterbugs and live music on Saturday and Sunday. Both of the festival’s outdoor stages will showcase music during all three days of the festival.

Founded in 2001, Satchmo SummerFest celebrates the life, legacy and music of Louis Armstrong, whose birthday coincides with the event. Admission to the party costs $5, a price that includes access to the Satchmo Symposium and Pops’ Playhouse inside the old U.S. Mint.
