The Soul Rebels announce European tour with Talib Kweli

The Soul Rebels will head to Europe with hip-hop icon Talib Kweli this summer. The band just announced an outing that will take them to the UK, France, Switzerland, Germany, Czech Republic and Ireland over the course of July, though Talid Kweli will only be on board for some of those shows. They will also make stops in Brooklyn and Toronto for a pair of warm up show before they make their way across the pond.

“[Talib Kweli] has the musical ear, definitely he has the lyrical genius,” co-founder and snare drummer Lumar LeBlanc tells Mass Appeal. “We do our collaborations with artists that it makes sense to do it with, who have the musical scope just as we do, so that those two worlds can merge together.”

The upcoming tour marks the latest collaboration between the New Orleans brass mainstays and Talib Kweli, who joined them for East Coast and West Runs in 2016. It also adds another line to the Soul Rebels’ growing hip-hop resumé, which already includes a Jazz Fest performance with Nas, as well as sets with nationally renowned acts like Joey Bada$$ and Rakim. That’s all without even mentioning their past projects with local favorites like Curren$y, Mannie Fresh and Big Freedia, or their varied collaborations beyond the world of hip-hop. Over the past few years, the band has worked big name acts like Metallica, Marilyn Manson and Macklemore & Ryan Lewis, in addition to jam bands like the String Cheese Incident and Lotus.

Mass Appeal reports that the Soul Rebels are currently working on a follow-up to their last album, 2012’s Unlock Your Mind. Evidently, the project will feature appearances by a few rappers, which isn’t really surprising considering the band’s recent hip-hop collaborations.

It’s definitely gonna be an urban, contemporary-driven album. It’s gonna be a very good piece that is gonna be so dynamic,” LeBlanc told the publication. “The people we have onboard, man… the world’s really gonna be excited when they see and everything comes to fruition.”
