Soul Rebels, Talib Kweli, Curren$y To Perform At Joy Theater

After a summer of touring Europe together, the Soul Rebels will bring Brooklyn-bred tour mate Talib Kweli to the brass band’s hometown of New Orleans to play with together alongside fellow New Orleanian Curren$y on December 8 at the Joy Theater. flyer

Born out of the New Orleans marching-band tradition, the Soul Rebels gained fame for an ability to mix mainstream music with brass-brand roots. The critically acclaimed group has performed around the world and collaborated with artists ranging from Metallica to Macklemore and Ryan Lewis.

The Soul Rebels’ integration of modern music and jazz-style instrumentals has naturally delved into the world of hip-hop and R&B in the band’s 25-year career. In addition to the European summer tour with Kweli, The Soul Rebels toured previously with the rapper along the West Coast in 2016, and have performed with Nas, GZA, Joey Bada$$ and the late Prodigy.

Kweli found fame in the 1990s as one half of rap group Black Star alongside Mos Def, and has since gained recognition for his politically active music as a solo artist, label executive, and in-demand collaborator. The hip-hop artist has collaborated with the likes of Kanye West and Pharrell Williams.

Not only will this performance cross over musical tradition but also regional ones, bringing musicians from the North and the South together. Curren$y made a name for himself in New Orleans, having worked with the labels No Limit and Young Money. Now the head of Jet Life Recordings, he is one of the city’s preeminent hometown heroes in the world of rap.

Tickets for the 10p.m. show on December 8 concert range from $30 to $40 and are available here.
