Terrell Batiste of the Hot 8 Brass Band Gets a New Home

Terrell Batiste of the Hot 8 Brass Band is a first-time homeowner of a brand-new home in the Habitat for Humanity’s Musicians’ Village. It was built especially for him, to accommodate the fact that he lost both of his legs in a terrible auto accident, post-Katrina.

After a hospital stay of three months and more of rehabilitation, Terrell has continued to play in the Hot 8 all these years. And now he has his own home that’s been fitted for him to easily function with his handicap and his wheelchair.

Terrell and the Hot 8 will perform at ROMP, Habitat’s annual backyard games fundraiser. The event is Saturday May 10 at Palmer Park, with an entry fee of $25.00 per person or $100 per team. Walk-ups can also pay $5 for 30 minutes of playing select ROMP games. Teams will compete in scooter and water gun relays, tug of war, bocce ball, volleyball, football  and  cornhole toss and other games to raise money for Habitat. The event is open to the public of all ages and takes place from 11:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Terrell and his band mates in the Hot 8 Brass Band will perform music free, and the 610 Stompers will also perform. All proceeds benefit New Orleans Area Habitat for Humanity. There will also be a community mural project, food vendors and prizes. To register or learn more about ROMP or call (504) 861-2077.
