Tipitina’s To Host Super Sunday Showdown and Black and Gold Party

On September 19th, Tipitina’s will host the Super Sunday Showdown and sixth annual Black and Gold Kick Off Party.

This “showdown” pays homage to Mardi Gras Indian traditions while raising money for the New Orleans Musicians’ Assistance Foundation (NOMAF) Bo Dollis, Sr. Memorial Fund.

Dollis, influential Big Chief of the Wild Magnolias, died this past January at age 71.

The fund was recently established by the Dollis family and NOMAF to ease the financial burden on the families of active, masking Indians (who personally finance and create a new suit each year) during times of need. Interested Indians must complete an application process and receive the approval of the fund’s advisory board.

Taking the stage on the 19th will be the Wild Magnolias, the 79rs Gang, the Creole Hunters, Mystikal, Kermit Ruffins, “Big Sam” Williams, Mia X, Rockin’ Dopsie Jr., and the Pinettes Brass Band. Chuck Perkins will serve as MC.

In addition, a silent auction will be held, featuring such items as Bo Dollis, Sr. and Bo Dollis, Jr.’s custom stage jackets, a Todd Lannan print of Big Queen Laurita Dollis, 79rs Gang LPs, and more.

Several food options will be available outside the venue, including Tummy Rub Barbeque and Bittles with the Vittles.

VIP tickets for the event include access to Tipitina’s upstairs balcony and complimentary buffet-style food catered but Chef/Chief James of the Young Brave Hunters.

Said Bo Dollis, Jr. in a statement, “It was a dream of my father’s to have a resource for Mardi Gras Indians, just like the fund we’ve set up with the New Orleans Musicians’ Clinic. It is a truly humbling experience to see people come together in my dad’s name and in support of the culture.”

Tickets cost $15 in advance (or $17 on the day-of) and VIP packages cost $35. They can be purchased here.
