Hancock has been a member of the Flatlanders with Joe Ely and Jimmie Dale Gilmore, and he wrote many of the songs on Ely’s first three albums. Like Ely and Gilmore, he was influenced by the folk/country/blues of another Texas legend, Townes Van Zandt. Here’s Hancock playing “Boxcars” live earlier this year.
