YouTube du Jour: Preservation Hall Jazz Band

Last night, the Preservation Hall Jazz Band appeared on Late Night with David Letterman, joined by the Del McCoury Band for a rousing version of “I’ll Fly Away.”

On Saturday, the Hall Band will be the focus of Louisiana Fairytale, a documentary by Danny Clinch that will show at the Ogden Museum of Southern Art. It focuses on the relationship between Preservation Hall and rock band My Morning Jacket, and it takes its name from the song that My Morning Jacket’s front man Jim James (AKA Yim Yames) performed with the band for its 2010 album, Preservation.

The film is a behind-the-scenes look at the unlikely integration of two bands, one dedicated to the conservation and advancement of traditional New Orleans jazz, the other focused on breaking down the barriers of the rock genre and exploring new worlds of music. The hour-long film features the bands performing in the famously intimate Preservation Hall.

The Ogden Museum is hosting a “sneak-peak” screening of Louisiana Fairytale in advance of its showing in the New Orleans Film Festival (Oct. 14-20), an annual festival put on by the New Orleans Film Society.

The showing at the Ogden is on Saturday, July 23, 6:30 P.M. – 8:30 P.M. and is a part of a three-day film series. Also being shown is The Big Uneasy on Sunday, July 24, and God’s Architects on Monday, July 25.
