Tab Benoit, Medicine (Telarc Records)

Almost nobody can beat Tab Benoit for playing raw, dirty-sounding roadhouse blues. There is something about when he gets to rocking that gets everybody going in the way the best blues and rock ‘n’ roll should. Even his guitar tone has that slash-through-your-speakers/earbuds psycho tone that everyone from Travis Wammack to Johnny Guitar Watson to [...]

Jazz Fest Focus: Johnny Sansone

If New Orleans is home to a new renaissance, Johnny Sansone is ready to be its Da Vinci. “I think there’s a renaissance period coming and I’m really happy to be in this generation at this time,” says the New Orleans- based multi-instrumentalist who is known for maintaining a full and diverse musical schedule. He’ll [...]

Anders Osborne and Honey Island Swamp Band at Wednesday at the Square: Photos

The Wednesday at the Square concert series continued yesterday with a double bill of heavy, bluesy roots rock courtesy of Anders Osborne and opener Honey Island Swamp Band. YouTube du Jour: Anders Osborne

Anders Osborne has released the first official video from his American Patchwork album, “Standing with Angels.” Neither the song nor the video throw any curve balls, but their simple elegance is affecting.

Love You Guys!

Voodoo Video, New Orleans Stages and More

Our interns made our booth at Voodoo and coverage beforehand possible. Here are some of their reflections now that the festival’s over for another year.—ED. With sweetly provocative lyrics and a decidedly antiquated bent, Luke Winslow-King’s music delivers in both charm and pitch-perfect arrangements. His set on Voodoo’s Bingo! Stage was an ideal interlude between [...]

The Weekend’s Highs and Lows

The Highs: – Otis Taylor’s version of “Hey Joe” during the Crescent City Blues and BBQ Festival Saturday. Don Vappie played banjo with Taylor throughout the set and played a fevered, rhythmic solo when his turn came. Alvin Youngblood Hart followed him on guitar with a solo that was so thoroughly inside the blues idiom [...]

How Can You Explain New Orleans?

Have had a few people talk to me about my blog last week, about the Colorado gentleman who experienced some “effects” from Hurricane Katrina—the humidity went up. Of course we agree this insensitive soul should have kept his mouth shut. A New Orleans-born friend who lives in the western U.S. said that a gentleman attending [...]

YouTube du Jour: Osborne, Fohl and Sansone

The weekly woodshed sessions with Anders Osborne, John Fohl and Johnny Sansone have evolved into something more than just an occasion to work out new material. This year, they even took it to a Jazz Fest stage. They’re at Chickie Wah Wah tonight; here they are a a Threadhead event playing “Summertime in New Orleans.”
